What is that sound?
When two solo artists who have worked along side each other in the music industry their entire careers finally decide to get together and form an outfit, you expect to hear their usual sound…that is not the case with The Mary Saga.
Born and raised in Johannesburg , South Africa , Ryan Sullivan and Steve Clarke came to meet at their local record store in 1998…where Steve worked for peanuts. The two became best of friends, learning all things music alongside each other and spent plenty time in the clubs where they would drink themselves into a stupor and sometimes do a gig. Although they spent countless hours in studio together, not one project was ever completed…”we are impossible together” says Ryan, “yeah, and for once we agree on something” replies Steve, “I mean the music we're making now” he laughs.
In between all the messing around, they did somehow learn a few things and have managed to land themselves escalating solo careers in the music business. Having played all sorts of genres of dance music over the years, from drum ‘n bass and breaks to old school classic house, hard house, trance, funky house and pretty much anything cheesy, luckily they have both found their homes in something more tasteful. They have a burning passion for both Techno and Deep Progressive dance music, which is clear in their sound. Their releases are a derivative of their live performances, “We record everything we do live and then pull out all the cool stuff to clean up in studio.” I guess that answers the question…what is that sound?
Although they struggled to work on projects together in the past, the formation of The Mary Saga has lead to them creating something electric. Their sound is an interesting musical fusion, combining elements of all genres of electronic music with the intention of remaining intelligent.
